About This Calculator
What It Does
Calculate the final price of an item after a percentage discount. Enter the original price and the discount percentage to see both how much you save and the final sale price. Also supports reverse calculation β if you know the sale price, find the original price or the discount percentage.
Worked Example
Example 1 β Simple discount: A $100 item with 20% off. Discount = $100 Γ 20 Γ· 100 = $20 saved. Final price = $100 β $20 = $80. Example 2 β Large discount: A $250 coat at 50% off. Discount = $250 Γ 50 Γ· 100 = $125 saved. Final price = $250 β $125 = $125. You pay half. Example 3 β Multiple discounts: A $200 item discounted 30% then an extra 10% off the sale price. First discount: $200 β $60 = $140. Second discount: $140 β $14 = $126. Total savings: $74 (37% off original). Stacked discounts do not add to 40% β the second applies to the reduced price.
Real-World Usage
Use during sales events, Black Friday, Cyber Monday, clearance sales, and seasonal promotions. Compare discounts across stores to find the best deal. Calculate the true cost of a bulk or wholesale discount. Verify that an advertised discount matches the actual savings at checkout. Useful for pricing strategies in retail businesses.
Local Context
Most countries display prices including VAT/tax, so the discount applies to the tax-inclusive price. In the US and Canada, sales tax is added at checkout and the discount applies to the pre-tax subtotal. Percentage discounts are a universal retail concept and work the same way worldwide.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the original price by the discount percentage, then divide by 100. Example: 20% off $50: 50 Γ 20 Γ· 100 = $10 discount. Sale price = $50 β $10 = $40.
What is the difference between a discount and a coupon?
A discount is a percentage or fixed amount off the regular price, applied automatically at checkout. A coupon is a code or voucher that must be presented to receive the discount.
What is a typical discount percentage in retail?
Retail discounts range from 10-50%. End-of-season sales offer 30-50% off. Clearance items reach 70% off. Luxury brands rarely discount more than 20%.
