Sleep Debt Calculator

Calculate your total sleep debt over 7 or 14 nights and estimate how long recovery may take.

About This Calculator

What It Does

This calculator estimates total sleep debt over a period of days, average nightly shortfall, and how long recovery may take at different paces. Sleep debt builds up when actual sleep falls short of your body's sleep need over consecutive nights.

Worked Example

If your sleep need is 8 hours (480 min) and you sleep an average of 6.5 hours (390 min) for 7 nights, your total debt is 630 minutes. At a standard recovery pace of +60 min/night, you would need about 11 recovery nights. Recovery pacing helps avoid oversleeping or disrupting your schedule.

Real-World Usage

Sleep debt is common during busy work weeks, after travel, or during illness. The calculator helps you understand the scale of the shortfall and set a realistic recovery plan. Recovery is not instantaneous โ€” it typically takes several nights of adequate sleep.

Local Context

Sleep need varies by individual and age. The default 8-hour target is a general guideline for adults. Some people function well on 7 hours, while others need 9. Adjust the sleep need to match your personal baseline.
