Square Footage Calculator

Square footage is the area of a rectangle: its length multiplied by its width, both measured in feet. This calculator reads either measurement system, reports the area in square feet and square metres, and turns a price per unit of area into the total cost of covering it.

Formula

Area = length × width. Square metres = square feet × 0.09290304. Total cost = area in the price's unit × price per unit of area.

About This Calculator

What It Does

This calculator turns a rectangle's two sides into its area. Enter the length and the width — in feet, metres, inches, yards or centimetres — and it converts both sides to feet, multiplies them and shows the area in square feet and in square metres. If you also enter a price per square foot or per square metre, it multiplies the area in that unit by the price and gives the total cost of covering the floor.

Worked Example

Example — a room 12 ft long and 10 ft wide: 12 × 10 = 120 sq ft, which is 11.15 sq m. At 2.50 per sq ft the covering costs 120 × 2.50 = 300. A room measured in metres works the same way: 4 m × 3 m = 12 sq m, or 129.17 sq ft.

Real-World Usage

Use it to price flooring, laminate, carpet, paint or turf before you buy, to compare a listing quoted in square feet with a metric floor plan, or to check a contractor's quote. Entering a price per unit of area turns the same measurement into a budget figure.

Local Context

Square feet are the everyday unit for floor area in the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia, while most of continental Europe quotes square metres. The two are linked by a fixed factor — 1 sq ft = 0.09290304 sq m, so 1 sq m ≈ 10.764 sq ft — and this calculator reports both, so a quote from either side of the Atlantic can be compared without converting by hand.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is square footage the same as square metres?

No — they are two units for the same area. One square foot is 0.09290304 square metres, so 120 sq ft is about 11.15 sq m, and one square metre is about 10.764 sq ft.

How do I work out the area of a room that is not a simple rectangle?

Break it into rectangles, work out each one and add the areas: an L-shaped room is two rectangles. This calculator takes one rectangle at a time, so add the areas it returns.

Should I add extra area for cuts and waste?

The figure here is the net floor area. Order 5 to 10% more for cutting, pattern matching and offcuts — 10% on 120 sq ft is another 12 sq ft.

How do I convert a price per square metre to a price per square foot?

Divide the square-metre price by 10.7639. A floor at 20 per square metre is 20 ÷ 10.7639 ≈ 1.86 per square foot.
