GPA Calculator

A grade point average is the credit-weighted mean of a course list: each grade is converted to grade points, multiplied by the course's credits, and the total divided by the credits taken. This calculator also prints the unweighted average, where every course counts once, and both on the percentage scale.

Formula

Weighted GPA = Σ(credits × grade points) ÷ Σcredits. Unweighted GPA = Σ grade points ÷ courses counted.

About This Calculator

What It Does

This calculator finds your grade point average from a list of courses. Enter each course's credits and its grade as a percentage, and it returns the weighted GPA and the unweighted GPA on the 4.0 scale, plus the same two averages on the percentage scale. Credits let a four-credit course count for more than a one-credit course, and a zero-credit course is ignored.

Worked Example

The page opens with three courses: 4 credits at 90 % (A-, 3.7), 3 credits at 80 % (B-, 2.7) and 3 credits at 70 % (C-, 1.7). Weighted GPA = (4 × 3.7 + 3 × 2.7 + 3 × 1.7) ÷ 10 = 28.0 ÷ 10 = 2.80. Unweighted GPA = (3.7 + 2.7 + 1.7) ÷ 3 = 2.70. Weighted average = (4 × 90 + 3 × 80 + 3 × 70) ÷ 10 = 810 ÷ 10 = 81 %. Unweighted average = (90 + 80 + 70) ÷ 3 = 80 %. The weighted GPA (2.80) is above the unweighted one (2.70) because the best grade carries the most credits.

Real-World Usage

Use it to check a semester average before a transcript is issued, to see what one more grade does to your standing, to convert a percentage report card to the 4.0 scale for an application, or to compare a credit-weighted average with a plain course average.

Local Context

Grading systems differ by country and by school. The 4.0 scale and the letter bands used here are the common US convention. A school that reports percentages only can read the percentage averages, and a school whose scale differs can adjust the credits to weight courses the way it does. The calculator gives an estimate and does not replace your institution's own GPA rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I calculate my GPA?

Convert each grade to grade points, multiply each by the course credits, add the products up and divide by the total credits. For four credits at 90 % (A-, 3.7 points) and three credits at 80 % (B-, 2.7 points), the weighted GPA is (4 × 3.7 + 3 × 2.7) ÷ 7 = 3.27. The calculator makes the percentage-to-grade-points conversion for you.

What is the difference between a weighted and an unweighted GPA?

A weighted GPA counts each course by its credits, so a four-credit course moves the average more than a one-credit course. An unweighted GPA counts every course equally, one course one vote, which is what a school means when it says it does not weight by credits.

How is a percentage converted to grade points?

A percentage is mapped to the standard US letter bands: 90 to 92 % is an A- (3.7), 83 to 86 % is a B (3.0), 73 to 76 % is a C (2.0), and below 60 % is an F (0.0). A 90 % therefore reads as 3.7 grade points, not 3.6.

Does a zero-credit course affect my GPA?

No. A course with zero credits carries no weight and is left out of both averages, which is how pass/fail and audit courses are normally treated. The Courses counted figure on the result says how many courses were used.
